Started from The Bog car park and followed Shropshire Council's suggested circular walk (available as pdf download). Slight scramble up to the trig; great admiration for the constructors AR Martin, Curry and the pack ponies who carried the building materials. After taking in the wonderful views, we extended the 5.5 mile circular walk to include some restored (miners') cottages at Blakemoorgate near Snailbeach. Returned to the car park then had a look around The Bog Mine.

A fab trig point this one, and I'd rank it as one of the U.K's great trig's due to the scramble you have to undertake to get to it perched high on top of Manstone Rock. A cracking days walking from White Grit to reach the Stiperstones, also bagging the trig on Corndon Hill en-route. Not been this way since 1961 – I know that makes me an old git – some would even say a miserable old git. I was on a walking holiday hostelling with my first girlfriend – we started at Ross on Wye then Lynoshall, Clun and Newtown. We passed through The Bog and The Stiperstones on the way to Wilderhope Manor – all with a Bartholomew’s half inch map no gps and no mobile phones – how did we manage? You may ask – where is she now – well she went off to Liverpool University and joined the intelligentsia – I stayed home completing my apprenticeship at Rolls-Royce in Derby and joined the prolateriate. Perhaps this is what’s made me morose – or is it engineering that does this? Don’t think my route would have taken me to the trigpoint on the first occasion. Walking this time with CURRYSCRIM – he’s not so old and not so miserable – in fact quite cheerful – especially when he’s sampled the good ale in The Bridges pub. The pub formally called The Horseshoe is now owned by The Three Tuns Brewery and renamed The Bridges. Walked over to The Stiperstones from Betchcott Hill.

The heavily cemented stone built pillar is precariously perched on top of a jagged hilltop tor on the crest of a moorland ridge in the Shropshire Hills to the south west of Shrewsbury. It was reached on footpaths from Snailbeach at the northern edge of the ridge. The trig lacks a cap or plug. Some initials have been carved into the spider and the hooks are a bit battered. The FB S1523 was a vivid turquoise colour in the bright sunshine. Snailbeach has interesting remnants of the local lead mining industry. The woods above the village were very pretty and the views from the ridge top path were astounding. The ridge has several impressive steep sided valleys on its western flank. The path becomes rockier on the higher ground and in places some of the rocks sparkled in the sunshine. Entertaining scrambling was had on the Devil’s Chair. A light scramble was also required on Manstone Rock in order to reach the trig. The pillar has a phenomenal panorama. It looks over the vast Shropshire Plain to the north with distant hazy hills on the horizon. The Wrekin and the Buildwas Power Stations could be seen to the north east. The summit of Brown Clee Hill could be seen beyond the lengthy ridge of the Long Mynd to the east. The Black Mountains were in the distance to the south. To the south west Corndon Hill and the Kerry Hills could be seen with Plynlimon in the distance. Cadair Idris was in the distance to the west and Snowdon in the distant north west. The Breiddens and Berwyns could be seen to the north. The area has been designated a SSSI and a National Nature Reserve for its geology and its wildlife and there are several ancient cairns near the summit.
