Pulled over on roadside about quarter of a mile north of the railway line at top of hill beside start of track heading west. Looked over gate and could see pillar to west and to south of copse of trees. Shortest route would be directly across field but walked west along the track and then south along the field boundary. Good views to south. Asphalt cap.

Of the four pillars I bagged today, this one was the most straightforward. Parked on a verge opposite a house just north of the bridleway, and walked down the track till I could enter the field. Followed hedgerow to the wood, turned left, and at the end of the wood, there was the pillar, sunning itself and enjoying a decent view of the valley. Nice, pleasant, quick and easy bag. Why aren't they all like this?

We parked to the ESE of the trig, along Savernake Rd (approx. SU237637), then took the track NW towards Terrace Clump. No crops in the field at this time of the year so we just walked across the field in a straight line to the trig. Trig in good condition with asphalt plug. Lovely views from here! I left a 2p coin in the front sight hole (directly below the FB) for the next visitor to find.

Fine view of Martinsell Hill from here - pillar ok, all 4 sight-holes open & asphalt cap. Earlier, just down the road from here I re-visited the remains of two railway stations: Savernake Low Level (only rubble & some rusting old rails) & Savernake High Level (platforms remain in place & original station has been incorporated into a large residence.) Incredible to think that this quiet country backwater once had two substantial stations.

Parked at the start of an extremely muddy track off a minor road at the southern end of Durley, but frost had rendered it all very hard, so no problems. Walked directly to the trig through a field of stubble. Trig is located in the field close to Terrace Clump, a small wooded area. Pillar is in good condition, plug missing, replaced with asphalt, all site holes open. Some good views across to Salisbury Plain and the southern edge of the Marlborough Downs.

The pillar stands near the edge of an arable field, close to a copse on a small hill near the south eastern edge of Savernake Forest. It has an asphalt plug and FB S1911. The trig was visited on a short walk that included the forest and the Kennet and Avon Canal. The tracks through the ancient woodland of Savernake Forest were very pleasant and filled with birdsong. A large herd of deer was seen grazing in a field next to Lover’s Walk and Bruce Tunnel is an impressive example of early 19th century canal work. The trig mostly looks south across the Vale of Pewsey to the clump topped downs on the northern edge of Salisbury Plain and west to Martinsell Hill. Savernake Forest is a SSSI and the area is within the North Wessex Downs AONB.
