One of seven trigs bagged along the A66 corridor, making my way to Keswick for the bank holiday weekend. This was the last but definitely not the least. I parked at the roadside for a short walk to the pillar. The pillar is in generally good condition and retains the original centre for the spider. Great views of the surrounding area. I probably would have scored this one 8 or 9, however, I've given it 10 due to its history and importance to the OS - it was here on the 4th June 1962 where the last observations were made for the retriangulation of Great Britain.

Good to visit this noted 'last' pillar. We sat up here having a picnic, supping our coffee & rolls whilst admiring the dramatic glowering black & grey clouds surely heading our way and about to offload gallons of rainwater, but not a drop dropped! And we were up here for half an hour. Wonderfully bleak autumn scene to behold. Having now secured the first and last trigs (Cold Ashby and Thorney Gale), it's just a matter of bagging the few thousand in between.

Parked the van just to the north of the trig in a cut on the side of the road. Along the stone wall there was one stone which was lower than the rest which is could easily climb over and hop over the barbed wire on the other side. The ground is quite uneven from here up to the trig, maybe should of had my walking boots on instead of work boots.

Wanted to make Storm's 200th pillar a 'significant' one (her 100th was Little Ouse). Really wished I could have done this one a day earlier...June 4th would have been much more suitable! Once in sight of the pillar found that parking without blocking the lane or gateways is challenging. Went in via all the gates (as 'WTP' below), but it still feels oddly 'trespassy'. Only stayed as long as necessary to take photos and left quickly by heading directly back to the road and over the wall with the help of a tree. Felt oddly cheated - but then Cold Ashby is no more welcoming either! Fantastic weather today, and good views.

Seemed appropriate to make this 'last' TP the first one for me to log here - and on my birthday rather than the TP's birthday! After struggling with walls and gates like others, found two wall stiles which take you from the road. First one is opposite entrance to Leonard's Cragg (footpath marked on map) and second is in the wall that separates the first field from the one containing the trig. Hope that helps.

Great to see the pillar in such good condition - the last ever pillar to be erected during the Retriangulation of Great Britain between 1935 and 1962. A plaque on the pillar commemorates the fact. Whilst the OS database states 'Thorny Gale', the correct spelling is 'Thorney Gale'

A plaque by Ordnance Survey states this to be the last observation retriangulation station. Date June 1962. Great views. The gate entrances are more muddy than the open access to trig point.

The 50th anniversary of the final observations of the Retriangulation of Great Britain (4 June 1962) was the excuse for Clochandighter, coinea, wrose, Father Ted and me to meet up here. As it was also my 100th extant pillar it was extra special for me! I had contacted the landowner at Thorney Gale in late May to explain we would be visiting - he was more than happy for a small group of us to gather at the pillar commemorate the anniversary. On the day I parked on the grassy north verge of the lane immediately north of the pillar and crossed with care over the stone wall to access the rough field. Pillar has recently had a fresh coat of white paint - but who did it?! - and has a plaque on the NNW face explaining its significance to the Retriangulation. Metal cap with thick raised letters; FB faces NNW; SSE sighthole open, others plugged. Nice to be able to put a few faces to names! I brought along my filming gear as ITV Tyne Tees & Border were interested in having some footage of the event and I drove straight to Gateshead afterwards to give them the tape. However I think some other anniversary this weekend must have dominated their coverage as they chose not to use it in the end! Pillar with famous plaque in good condition. Spider has replacement OS centre cap with raised large wide letters. Flush bracket faces 332° NW. Vented through SE sight hole. The pillar was completed on 5th May 1960, suggesting that the plaque was added later.

Nice little spot. Good historical Trig. Good views all round. Climbed over wall then down the field to a gate which comes out near the bridleway.

1st of 8 New Year's Day trig visits. I just loved this trig and its location. It was a frosty but sunny day and the far reaching 360 degree views were simply beautiful. This was also my first sighting of a plug with raised lettering. What a start to the year!

Thorny Gale what a delight my favourite Trig to date not least because of easy access, about twenty yards from the lane, set in the upper Eden Valley its tranquil location and wonderful views over rolling pastures brought to mind Blake's Jerusalem( In England's green and pleasant land.) and to top it all a plaque informed me it was the last Trig to be used to complete the retriangulation of Britain on the 4th June 1962.
