1/3 At last, a dry, sunny day after, for Cardiff at least, the wettest February on record. Train from Merthyr to Merthyr Vale (£3) and crossed valley floor to Abervan to pay a respectful visit to the village cemetery. It was a deeply humbling experience to walk between the two rows of immaculately kept white arched graves where lie bodies of children killed in the terrible 1966 disaster. There followed a circuitous walk, firstly, south on Taff Trail then upward on old forestry tracks to wind round clockwise, avoiding all clambering of fences and thrashing through woodland, to reach summit. Expansive views, Pen-y-Fan streaked with snow.

Walk from the overgrown cemetery above Mountain Ash to Twyn Brynbychan and then along ridge to trig point on top of Mynydd Gethin (TP2085) and back via lane through Cefnpennar. Just following faint trails through the forest to reach Twyn Brynbychan pillar but the top always in sight whenever a clearing in the trees reached.

I fancied a train ride and a walk today to took the train to Mountain Ash. Didn't choose the most sensible way up as I wen't NE up past the cemetery and onto the adjacent hill as it was tricky to cross the ravine. Eventually got to a col then headed south and down through the woods to the trig point. After also visiting a nearby tricky geocache I came down a more sensible route and ended up by the cattery and then down to the station.

Asked and given permission to park at cattery at end of Fforest Road. Steep farm track then woodland path before breaking out into open. Pillar sits at top of the hill. Top cap missing, no plug; LHD side sight hole open. There is a significant horizontal fracture running round all sides of the pillar at FB level and the top edges are becoming raggedly. There is a Twyn Brynbychan auxiliary buried block approx 350m SSE which doesn't have its own T:UK entry. Extensive panoramic views. Benchmark rivet found on a rock 100m NW.

Parking up at the head of the road that is signed to the kennels I thought I would be a good little boy and follow the footpath for this. the council even gave me a tempting pointer as I entered the wood. But at the first split "my" path wasnt there. Worked on and eventually found the fence that runs along the ridge to the trig with its adjacent path a solid wall of bike and 4x4 churned mud so parallleled it just inside the woodland where the ground is better. Trig less plug is in good shape. Descending I spotted a path running beneath the low voltage electric cables running in the right direction and followed it down almost to the start point with none of the issues of the ascent :-) For reference if you climb from the kennels it is about 50m on the right after you make the first 90deg left prior to entering the forestry and is an easy slog to the trig. Still at least it made trig 450 memorable.
