Initially pulled up at the entrance to Whaddon Farm about half a mile north west of Shipston. Called the telephone number on the sign at the gate but there was no reply. Drove back towards the town then west along the B4035 for about half a mile then turned north into a fairly new housing estate. Headed north and west gaining a bit of height until the road ended beside metal fencing. On foot along the path at the boundary of the estate but no obvious way through the thick vegetation to the hill. Carried on around the path until reaching a play area. There were a few children about. Saw a thinner gap in the brambles and began to push through and then heard ‘excuse me, what are you doing?’ It was a small boy, I said I was trying to get into the next field, he said ‘climb over the gate’ and pointed me towards it a few metres further on from where I was. Very kind, thanked him. Over the gate was a pond area with lots of bulrushes. There was a barbed wire fence to get over into the field beyond. The mast on the top of the hill was visible. I went around the perimeter of the field, into the next field then turned uphill. Saw three deer scampering off through the bushes. Half way up the hill reached the field boundary but no easy way through. Crossed back to the first field through a gap used by wildlife, judging by the tracks. Then another wildlife gap up the hill. Over and under a couple of electric fences. Reached the top near the mast, slightly higher ground to north west. Conscious being close to the farm but was above it and didn’t seem to be in a direct line of sight. Along the hedge line then at a gap in the hedge spotted pillar. Good result. Spider and cap in place. Farmland views. Retraced route back down hill except went straight across first field back to pond. Little people were still there. Asked me what I had been looking for. I explained about the triangulation point but not sure it held any interest for them.

7/9 Parked on Darlingscote Road to the North and walked up to the farm. We met the farmer who was very helpful but would not want to get the wrong side of him. He offered us a route which went through a field of cows and bull followed by several electric fences. After more conversation, he then let us through the farm and an uphill track led straight to the pillar. He referred to an earlier visitor who had asked permission but painted the pillar with white paint. He would have liked to have been informed before the job was done. The farmer is quite friendly but be prepared to have a long conversation.

A good day to visit with it being so dry underfoot. Left bike by barn just of the main Fosse Way, then easy walk across two fields. Good all round views. Observed one hare and three deer as I approached.

To avoid embarassment at the farm I decided to approach this one from the west off the Fosse Way (Shane decided to stay in the car and read the paper). I followed the hedge lines of the arable fields and quickly came to the trig, which is not visible from any properties. Plug with indented lettering.

Oh, trigpointing can be such fun! Took Father Ted's advice and left home with spare shoes and bleach. Farmer somewhat non-plussed! The original plug is still there with slightly indented lettering. W sighthole open, the others closed. Very deep recesses under the lugs. Quite a lot of paint remaining on N & W faces. Distant views and what a GREAT mobile phone mast....

I was about to drive into Waddon Farm to seek permission to approach this trig when I was the large signs saying do not pass here without obtaining advanced permission and phoning this number. The farmer was still seemingly very concerned about disease transmission and insisted that all visitors used disinfectant. To complicate matters he told me that the disinfectant spray at the gate was not working. Undeterred I went into nearby Shipston-on-Sour and spent 71p on a bottle of bleach. I also fortunately had a pair of very old shoes in the car that I did not mind dousing with bleach and chucking later. The sandwiches tasted a bit funny after that but at least the toilet is now clean. Although the walk up to the masts is through a sheep field the irony is that the trig sits in an arable field.
