I last visited this pillar in Aug 2022 when the conditions were extremely different. On that occasion I was alone and temperatures were expected to exceed 30°C. On this occasion there was deep snow, in places it had drifted and was around knee deep. I was also leading a group for Dearne Valley Walking Group. The views were just as spectacular, possibly more so because of the snow. No change to the pillar since my last visit.

Temperatures were expected to exceed 30°C during the latest heatwave and so I made a 7am start for a 7.8 mile hike out of Monsal Head to avoid the highest of the days temperatures. It was a cool 10°C when I started and had reached 24°C by the time I had finished the hike around 11am and it continued to rise quickly. The hike provided great views throughout including those from the site of the pillar. It seemed like I had the world to myself with the peace broken only by traffic noise in the distance. The site is a Peak District 'Ethel' and included a bronze age bowl barrow (burial ground). The pillar was generally in good condition but was missing the original centre for the spider.

The pillar can be seen for miles around perched on top of the Wardlow Hey Cop, and is yet another peak district gem!! Parked near the entrance to the Cressbrook Dale National Nature Reserve. I then walked through 4 fields along the path through the Reserve. At the end of the path, I then headed north east up a very steep hill to the pillar. Beware however when taking this route that there is sign at the entrance to the Nature Reserve which states: "....this part of the....Reserve is being grazed by Cattle. This includes a bull and cows with calves...If the cattle charge you and your dog, let your dog loose." As the area is very hilly, there are sections of the route where you won't know whether there is any cattle about on the other side or not, until you are halfway into the field! However, fortunately for me, there was no cattle.

To log this trig pillar and not visit Tansley and Cressbrook Dale would be missing one of the finest dales in the Peak District. An obvious path rises SE from the footbridge at the bottom of Tansley. It is an out and back to the trig before continuing N up Cressbrook to pass Peter's Stone. Here the last gibbet in the county and last gibbeting took place. A gibbet was a gallows to display the bodies of criminals after execution. The last gibbeting was 1832. Locally it is called Gibbet Rock. Once you reach the A623 take the path W that climbs out of the dale and proceed above Cressbrook on a sweeping permissive path to the beginning of open access in Tansley Dale and onwards to Litton (tea shop and pub). This lovely trig is gifted to Spain for opening its doors to the UK. Hopefully, the "pond life" that have visited and trashed our local beauty spots the last few weeks, will clear off back to Majorca etc.

Visited with Melch whilst out walking in the area. We approached from the cross roads to the east which involved to crossing of a double barbed wire fence. Returned to the south on the much easier permissive path route. Pillar has quite a commanding position with all round views.

Came across from High Rake via Coombs Dale. Trig was clearly visible from quite a distance. Headed down into Hay Dale and picked up the permissive path on to Wardlow Hay Cop. Lovely views in the fading winter sun. Back to Great Longstone via footpath west of Longstone Moor then down the hill along a walled lane.

Done on a walk from Monsal Head on a glorious Spring day. I went over a small (padlocked) gate at the top of Cressbrook Dale at a junction with a bridlepath which heads due east towards Wardlow. At this point, the trig is not visible, but ascending south easterly up a short steady rise it appears quite spectacularly giving superb all round views. For the next 5 or so miles, we could see it upon the skyline. A well earned pint at the Monsal Head Hotel was the perfect ending to a cracking day.

There is access via a pedestrian gate at SK 18015 73309. It is difficult to park just there without causing obstruction so best to go 100 meters futher down the lane where there is a place for one car. Follow the track uphill until you get to a gate, though the gate and tuen right towards the ruin. Walk left of the ruin and slightly downhill to another pedestian gate. Through the gate and head right and up through trees to the top.
