In the middle of a grass field, so easy to locate, but a quick trespass needed to access. This is one of my local trigs so I know the views are good, but this visit was on a drizzly, murky day when things could have been a lot nicer. Visited a few times, but the first occasion was on 28 Oct 2005.

Slight detour from the 15+ mile CCC geocaching trail, which necessitated a climb over a fence and then a gate; not sure if there is a better way to get there! The trig is on a concrete plinth on a slight ridge, and seemed higher than other trigs. Superb countryside views all around including several tumuli.

Long walk today taking in three trigpoints. Set off from Wimborne St Giles to reach this one from the Harley Down direction crossing Ackling Dyke to do so. What a wonderful area this is with its long and round barrows, Roman Road, the enigma that is the neolithic Dorset Cursus, and the so called 'Celtic' farmsteads. And then there's the trigpoint: looking good & in fine condition safely positioned on its concrete base away from any marauding tractors.

Parking on A354 awkward - 'No Parking' signs were ignored, would have been better off using the car park on the minor road NE of the trig. Lots of impressive tumuli, long barrows and earthworks en-route. Pillar is located in a rough pasture 60m off the public path. It is in good condition; rear sight hole open, the other 3 closed; original cap in place. Good views N to high ground and to E and W over rolling downland; view S obscured by distant tree line.

The pillar is sited on top of a low linear earthwork between a field of long grass and a wheat field. It has a metal cap with shallow lettering, an OS Passive Station plate and FB S2591; its foundations are exposed by up to a couple of inches. I reached the site by paths from the car park on the minor road to the northwest; my walk included a stretch on the Ackling Dyke Roman Road. Numerous tumuli were seen en route, there are a couple of long barrows and earthworks of an ancient settlement near the pillar on the hill top. The settlement earthworks are overgrown and difficult to define and the route of the nearby Dorset Cursus could not be discerned. The view from the pillar is mainly to the north and west across gently undulating downland with a patchwork of large fields and woodland towards the higher ridges at the edge of Cranborne Chase.
