What an interesting pillar. Loving the photo on TPUK from 1991 when it still looked like a conventional pillar. What a shame they didn't resite the FB when they made the pillar "huge". Ran here from Portreath along the coast path. Fantastic scenery and history in these parts. Clouds around in the morning, but they had all burnt off by the afternoon. Let the heatwave begin!

Despite the sunshine a cold wind was blowing off the sea - my t-shirt was not quite enough to keep me warm! Pillar now appears to be encased inside a stone-built topograph - the original spider and a tarmac cap is visible on the top through a circular hole in the topograph plate. Consequently no flush bracket is visible. Excellent views along the coastline to the SW and NE, and good views inland (Carn Brea monument clearly visible). Position logged from GPS device accurate to 5m.

The pillar is clad in stone and stands on a gorse and heather hilltop; the FB is not visible; it has a concrete plug; a topograph plate covers most of the spider and it has an OS GPS plate on the side. The hill was reached by the footpath from Beacon Cottage Farm with my son, my sin-in-law and my granddaughter after we had spent a couple of hours exploring the fascinating old mine buildings of Wheal Coates and admiring the spectacular coastal scenery of the heritage coast. From the pillar there are stunning, long ranging views: north and south along the coast and inland over the countryside of Cornwall.
