The former site of the pillar is just over the wall of the viewing platform which was reached by walking up from the nearby services. The site looks directly onto the original Severn Bridge with Chepstow and the hills of Monmouthshire and the Forest of Dean on the other side of the river. Upstream Oldbury Power Station can be seen; downstream is the new bridge over the Severn and the industry of Avonmouth. The site is next to the old Aust Services building; looking further inland is the low ridge that runs from the suburbs of northern Bristol towards Thornbury. On a grassy bank above the Travelodge car park is a cylindrical pillar with a stainless steel centre cap. Aust Cliff and the Severn Estuary are SSSIs and the bridge is a grade I listed structure.

The trig is definitely missing (it went in 1961 apparently when they built the Severn Bridge). Wigglesworth is right though about the new pillar (not OS) which stands on the bit of high ground to the right of the old services building (now turned into offices) Park at the Travel Lodge and head north. It's a cylindrical pillar the same size as the ones near the Channel Tunnel in Kent but doesn't have a traditional spider. Not a bad substitute though with such great views of the bridge.
