About a mile west of the T junction in Winterbourne village, pulled over on verge at a dip in the road at the start of a footpath adjacent to a house. North along footpath, partly tarmac. Headed onto high ground where there were a couple of gazebos. Not far enough. Could see a wooded hill further on to north west. Back down to footpath, through gate, across a grassy field, could get muddy but ok at the time. Another gate then uphill to left. Wooded area fenced, had to be in there. Onto highest part of ground, pillar quite well camouflaged amongst tree trunks. On the 1967 OS sheet 158 (adds to the fun) indicates clear ground. Not any more, views lost. Fencing could be to do with badgers as there were quite a few big burrows on the hill to avoid. Spider and cap in place.

Accessed from the path to the south. Having read the previous logs, there were a few differences by the time of my visit: the second gate is now a metal one; the metal gate before the stile is gleaming and new; the stile itself is no longer there; and - probably because I bagged this one on Boxing Day - there was no vegetation on top of the hill, so the pillar was easily accessible. Fence behind the new metal gate isn't easily climbable, but following it round to the far corner of the sheepfield leads to another metal gate, which is easily scaled to reach the hill and the pillar. No unwelcoming signs were spotted. All in all, considerably easier than I was expecting! Trig is in good nick, but covered in moss. No views.

Hmm.. I must be getting tired! Cycled up farm drive as it is a bridleway. Blokes in farm yard told me where the BW goes. In a nice way. The BW gets you withing 50m of the trig but then you have to hop over a barbwire fence and into, what looks like, a pheasant feeding station. There was a trailer , but no-one about. I then bashed around in the stingers and bracken trying to find it. I was about to give up as I couldnt see it anywhere and didnt want too much noise, when, if by magic, I saw it. It was in a small clearing. Glad this is the last one for today as took a bit of a lie down, once i got back to the bike. Took it slow back to Chieveley but the over grown BW didnt help in a couple of places.

We parked in a grassy layby on Winterbourne Rd to the SSE of the trig (point A on the attached satellite image). The layby was on the S side of the road, opposite Winterbourne Wood Cottage, & had an Environment Agency OBH (observation borehole) labelled Winterbourne Mnr. OBH, grid ref. SU 44490 71762. We then walked W along the road to the footpath immediately to the W of "Mudhall" (marked "Mud Hall Cottage" on the OS Explorer map). There were a few nice horses in the paddocks at Mudhall & 2 very yappy white dogs. We took the path heading N, going through 3 wooden gates (points B, C & D). Each gate had plaques that stated "Erected By West Berks Ramblers For West Berks Council". Climbed over a 4th gate (metal) (point E), & to the left and up the hill was the stile that had a tree fallen over it. The stile & the whole area beyond was overgrown & impenetrable, completely inaccessible. We carried on walking around the base of the hill until we were at the N side of it, climbed over a 5th gate (metal) with a sign that said "PRIVATE NO PUBLIC RIGHT OF WAY" (point F). Then we made our way up to the top of the hill. The trig was in a clearing (i.e. no trees but full of impassable undergrowth) at the top of the hill, on the N side of the clearing (point G). It was extremely difficult to find the trig and then to get to it due to the thick undergrowth, the trig being completely obscured & engulfed. We had to do a lot of chopping and cutting with our gardening shears to make a path to it and clear all the undergrowth around it. Tip for future visitors: gardening tools are a must. 8 out of 10 for the difficulty finding it & the amount of gardening / chopping required! Trig was in very good condition, completely covered in green moss, original metal cap in place with lightly indented lettering, all 4 sightholes open. We could just see the M4 in between the trees, although we could hear it the whole time. Lots of pheasants around. *** Revisited 4 April 2015 - did a lot of chopping to clear the area around the trig & scraped all the green moss off the trig. It is looking in fine shape again! I left a 2p coin in the front sighthole (immediately below the FB) for the next visitor to find.

Before chopping: completely engulfed, completely inaccessible
After chopping: made ourselves a path to it

Walked up from the south along the footpath. The grass seemed to get longer as I went through each of the three kissing gates! Once beside the tumulus I climbed through the barbed wire fence and then had to force my way through the bracken, brambles and nettles to find my way to the pillar which I could not see until I was less than 5 metres from it! Parked by lovely house with horse paddocks and followed bridleway through good quality kissing gates provided by Berks Ramblers & Council. Pillar on summit tumulus. Stile is inaccessible due to fallen tree. Vegetation not a problem at this time of year. No views to speak of. Returned same way - house has a superb northern glassed aspect. Underfoot conditions still very wet after winter.

Called here en route to Swindon Town 1-3 Leyton Orient. This trigpoint today was to be the first in a super hat-trick, but both Swindon & Saints let me down! At least the pillar was reliable: in general good condition, mostly moss-clad, cap intact, & all sight holes open. Within ear-shot of the M4. Fine countryside hereabouts - must return for a walk in this River Lambourn area with the old Newbury to Lambourn railway to trace.

Parked on minor road 800m S at Mud Hall Cottage, looks like a large new house built where that was. Stile from footpath into copse is getting rickety. Trig located in a sea of nettles etc, approaching waist height. Cleared vegetation from immediately round the pillar. Apart from a partial covering of moss pillar seems in good condition; all sight holes open; original cap in place. No views due to trees; M4 noise intrusive.
