The pillar is sited in the Wye Valley AONB near the north western edge of the Forest of Dean between Coleford and Monmouth. I walked up to the site through the woods from the layby on the A4136 Staunton Road to the north. The lanes of Staunton Meend are close to the trig if you don’t fancy the walk. The pillar has FB S6974 but lacks a cap or plug. The view from the trig is now partly restricted by nearby trees. It looks across the Forest of Dean to the distant Cotswold Edge to the south. There is an impressive view from the Buck Stone across to the Black Mountains in the north-west. The Buck Stone is a former Logan that was repaired and reinstated after being toppled in the 19th century. Between the Buck Stone and the trig are a small concrete pyramid flagstaff base and a bowl-like rock associated with sacrificial rites in local folklore.
