Handy car park in Kingsbridge by the shiny new(ish) community centre. Took paths due north of the village to the trig which is on Monkham Hill (name of the HuMP) or Withycombe Common (name on the map). OS 1:25k map shows Croydon Hill as being about a mile to the NW and is a few metres lower, so not sure who named this trig. Pillar, located a few metres off the path in rough heathland, is in good condition. Some good views, particularly to the north.

The pillar stands on the remains of a round barrow amongst the heathery heath of Withycombe Common. It is close to a track crossing the summit of a hill within Exmoor National Park to the south of Minehead. The site was reached by means of footpaths and a bridleway from Kingsbridge in the village of Luxborough in the valley to the south. The footpath near Perley Barn has a lovely view down the combe to the Brendon Hills and the bridleway through the woods on Monkham Hill was also quite pleasant. The pillar has a metal cap with shallow lettering and FB S3759. The foundations of the base are exposed by about four inches on the windward side. The trig has a good northern panorama taking in Dunkery Hill, Minehead, the Bristol Channel, Bridgwater Bay and the Quantock Hills. The Mendip Hills and the Welsh Coast could just be discerned in the distant haze. My return on the bridleway on the edge of Redhuish and Monkslade Commons gave good views of the Quantock and Brendon Hills. The path down through Slowley Wood was also very enjoyable. The hill top heaths of Withycombe and Redhuish Commons are part of the Dunster Park and Heathlands SSSI.

I have to say that this is one place I would probably never have gone to if it wasn't for trigpointing. Personally, I thought the location of this one was superb. Croydon Hill forest (the largest forest on Exmoor) is nearby, and from what I saw it looked fairly nice to run through. Must make the effort to attend an orienteering event there. The trees cut off the view to the south, but the views to the north and over the trees towards Dunkery are excellent. The pillar itself is set a short distance off the path, but the surrounding area is open to the public so access is no issue. The nearest car park to the trig is in Kingsbridge, at SS985376 (marked on 1:25K maps but not 1:50K), although bear in mind that the quickest route to the trig from there is up a steep and stony path. Alternatively, you can walk up through the forest from the Forestry Commission car park at SS974420, or do what I did and park at Kennisham Woods (SS965369), visit TP4593 (Lype Hill) en route, and take the forest track up near Churchcombe. Highly recommended.

Returned along forestry tracks to join the Luxborough to Withycombe road in Slowley Wood. Took the wrong road at the Inn (S instead of W) so pretty dark when got back to the self-catering cottage.
