Into Streatley from north west along A417. Sharp turn to right signed for golf club. After about a hundred metres happened to see a walker and dog coming from an opening between houses which turned out to be access point to National Trust land. Pulled over on side of road and headed directly uphill. Quite steep. As ground levels out, highest ground is towards the right, west, and into woods. Started heading in that direction, but after a pause and map check decided to look in the hedge line to the left, east, of the gate into the next field. Spotted pillar there from south side but other side of fence so went back around to north side. A bit overgrown with brambles and prickly dog roses hanging over the pillar. Needs secateurs to do a bit of clipping. Views to north and south from nearby, although vegetation obscured views from pillar.

Took g4wsb's advice and parked at Lardon Chase NT car park at the top of the mother of steep slopes. Gentle stroll along footpath to the corner of tree block that separates the Open access land from the golf course. Another life time wish visit ticked off - a view over the Goring Gap. First studied at senior school 50 years ago as a consequent stream (R.Thames) flowing over the General Slope SEastwards before erosion and weathering had created the ridge and valley trellised river landscape of the SE Midlands. Goring being sited in the gap to control traffic passing up and down the valley through the chalk ridge of the west Berkshire Downs. What a pity the visibility was so limited by low cloud and mizzle. I must return!

Parked at the National Trust car park to the SW of the trig - free parking but it was a small car park. It being a Sunday, the car park was full so we had to be a bit 'creative' with our parking! Short walk up the hill through a field with a lot of black cows. The field was covered in cow poo, so a lot of attention was paid to looking at the ground (instead of looking at the lovely scenery) to avoid the cow poo! The trig was immediately next to a stile, on the N side of the hedge / trees, in a corner of growth. I had to cut back a few overhanging branches from the nearby trees. Trig was in very good condition, concrete base exposed, original metal cap. Very easy to miss this one if you're walking along the S side of the hedge / trees and not looking closely for it. Tip for future visitors: look out for the stile, or cross over at the gate just before the stile.

Decided to climb Lough Down and rejoin The Ridgeway by this pleasant country way, thereby avoiding the A417. Although only 138m, the ascent was a puffing, huffing one. The pillar is tucked away in a line of bushes next to a stile. Rested awhile on a nearby wooden bench, ate my vittles, and enjoyed the views below of the Thames Valley.
