Our second bag on a day trip to York to see friends. Parked up by The Red Lion and walked straight across the field to the pillar. The fence is sturdy enough to get closer to the trig although those who own selfie sticks may find their use helps to prevent a double trespass. Nice pint of Timmy Taylor Landlord in The Red Lion afterwards.

Glorious day. Spent the day doing a 6 mile circular around Beningbrough Hall and Newton on Ouse collecting BMs. Called on the way home to Poppleton trig. Last time I called the corn was still to be harvested so I didn't bother. But today land stood waiting for spring cultivations. No harm done traversing the field and bagging. TP over the fence, alongside the Harrogate/York rail line. Land is flat, no hills and an easy bag!

This one has been on my to-do list for absolutely ages. As others have done, I parked up near the Red Lion (there's room in the lane to not have to use their car park) and crossed the A59. My plan was to just walk straight across the field, as it was cleared of crops and freshly ploughed. Unfortunately, the pouring rain meant the field was a foot-deep muddy quagmire, so I took the long way round the full field edge. The pillar is a fair bit further than I expected, and the new Network Rail fence is a proper steel and barbed wire job - happily though it is of a realistically scaleable height and strong/taut enough to use to get over. There is no need, however - the pillar can easily be touched by reaching over the fence, and the flush bracket faces east so is easily visible. The pillar looks in good condition albeit with a replacement cap. The rain meant my pictures were pretty poor, and I couldn't get a good snap of the flush bracket, but thankfully the return leg via the other side of the field was a little less slurry-like.

Parked in the gateway and set off up the field edge in my wellies through the sodden ground. I'd got about half way along the fence when the farmer pulled up behind my car and gesticulated to me to – well I suppose he meant get off my land. I wasn’t turning back without completing the mission – may as well be burnt as scalded. Made a quick dash to log the pillar then returned for my punishment. By this time my accomplice Heather was placating him – and making a very good job – when I got back they were discussing family history. Apparently he was concerned about badger baiters, metal thieves and metal detectorists but not loony old trigpointers. All was well and we had a laugh with him for some time. It would be best to get his permission to visit from the farm opposite – he must aware of visitors and have a good view of the field and parking spot. The field is planted right up to the hedge and fence so you can’t get to the pillar without trampling the crop.
